~What is Montessori~
What is Montessori:
A century ago, Dr. Maria Montessori developed this educational approach and philosophy based upon the belief that a child learns best in an environment that supports each individual's unique development. Through her observations of children she came to the understanding that children have a natural learning tendency that unfolds in "prepared environments" for multi-ages "communities" or groups.
At the ages of three to six years the child has what Dr. Montessori referred to as the "absorbent mind." The mind literally absorbs everything within its environment like a sponge. The role of the teacher is to guide each child's learning, provide knowledge of the materials, and act as a catalyst between the child and the environment.
The prepared environment contains specially designed materials utilizing the five senses. These materials invite the children to engage in learning activities at their own individual pace. Children learn by making discoveries with the materials they use, cultivating concentration, motivation, self-discipline and a love of learning.
The classroom is divided into several main areas in which the children are free to explore. These areas are listed to the left.

Christian Education:
Godly Play was developed by an Episcopal priest and Montessori teacher, Jerome Berryman. It is a method of Christian Education for children ages three to twelve. The hands-on Bible stories are presented by the teacher and are then placed on a shelf for the children to choose and retell the story as the teacher did. Additional stories and songs help children develop Christian values.
The goal of Godly Play is to help children become more fully aware of the mystery of God's presence in their lives.
